The Birmingham Music Festival developed from the Harborne Music Festival first held in 1937. It continued as an annual event until 1982 having widened its scope to include Dance and Drama.
After a brief lapse it was revived in 1984 by a new committee, in a more modest form and confined solely to Music.
With sixty or so classes the Festival covered vocal, piano and other instrumental music and was held at The Birmingham and Midland Institute, Newhall Street Birmingham.
In 2009 the decision was taken for the Festival to build on its established reputation as a piano competition and become a piano only competition.
In 2010, the Festival moved to its current venue: Edgbaston High School for Girls where we use two excellent theatres both equipped with splendid pianos and acoustics.
The Festival regularly attracts entries not only from the wider Birmingham area but also from as far as Bristol, South Wales and Yorkshire.
Our aim continues to be to promote music-
2011 is the seventieth anniversary of the very first Birmingham Music Festival. The Birmingham Music Festival is a registered charity (charity number: 517621) and is affiliated to the British & International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech.
